RAGBRAI Adventure - Waterloo to Manchester

Day 6 Route | Manchester

The weather forecast for Friday was for lots of rain and, if you were a duck, you were not disappointed! My bike computer registered 64 miles for the day and I calculated that 57 of those were in the rain. We stopped early for breakfast at Chris Cakes and they had everything set up in a barn so that was nice. One of the cooks leaned out the door and started flipping pancakes to people in line 30 feet away and yelling, "appetizer!" Later we stopped at Rowley to check to make sure the phone and IPod were dry. We got pretty cold there and so we just rode the rest of the way to Manchester without stopping. The 5 pancakes and sausage were enough fuel to get us through.
At the end of the ride, the sun came out and it turned out to be a nice day. I was thankful for that and for the spirit of the people of Manchester (theme: "Team Manchester: Ride hard, Play Hard") because just a week before much of the town was flooded. We set up camp and finished off the last of the tortillas with peanut butter, a staple for us throughout the week. Rested in a shady grassy spot before heading to town were we had a drink to toast the day before eating a bag sandwich lunch from a local coffee shop.
We found some grass and I let Rachel whip me in a couple of hands of Gin Rummy while listening to local favorite Ali Beck and her good C & W band. We said goodbye to our new Saluki friends from camp Wayne and Jenna and got disinterested in the Large Midgets and so headed back to camp. Our last RAGBRAI campout!
